All depends on you school. I can get Windows 8 for free, but I have to go through a special site (which also has Windows 7 still available, as well as Microsoft Office, for free). If you are curious, contact the IT help desk at your school. It's no skin off their back, doesn't cost them anything, and often (like when I went), they have preprinted out helpful pamphlets to get you up and running.

Doesn't work... says an administrator needs to create an account first.

This is only free if you've purchased Windows 7 then the upgrade is free. I know because I have purchased Windows 7 from my school and it was part of the "student discount" that the next version be free. I just clicked through the site and it states the same thing. "*Buy Office University today, get the next version FREE when available! Microsoft Office University is available to download for $99.95 USD!" ~Onthehub.com
