went to the Cingular Store Today and asked about the iPhone. I asked them If I could buy a new contract now and then buy the iPhone when it is released. They said that you have to get a new contract when the iPhone is released in order to pay $500 (discounted price) for the phone. So LeBlog has to open up a new cingular account with contract in June in order to get the $500 iPhone from DealsPlus.

what i would suggest would be that dealsplus go on and declare a winner as scheduled however, delay the prize. if im not mistaken the iphone comes out in june so if you guys wait before deciding on one route consider waiting. that way hopefully more options will arise as time passes and a better plan can be formed. also the user who wins this should not be at that big of a disadvantage either because he/she would not have been able to purchase the iphone right away anyway and this will also keep him/her hooked on to this site at least until more info is released and you guys can decide.

i would have to agree that you would be getting the iPhone, which is great, but getting the gift card first, then buying the iPhone with it wouldnt be as exciting. Personally, id love getting a package, tearing it open and finally laying my eyes on an iPhone. True, but when you buy the iPhone with the gift card, the result will be the same, you will still get the phone in a package, all it does is just delay the iPhone (and maybe add more exciteness). And lets not get carried into politics. Just let Deals Plus handle everything, you guys dont really have to worry about anything. If Vin has a problem about something, he will ask you like he did with the issue of how to deliver the iPhone to the winner.

Since we're all (or at least me) are just killing time waiting to find out the winner of this contest, I have some blog entries about user experience/user centered design up at: http://hcvl.hci.iastate.edu:4489/articles/tag/mikeoren that some of you may or may not be interested in. The blog is for a class, but I enjoy writing it. I figure it's somewhat relevant to this iPhone thread, since a lot of user experience/user centered design research went into creating the iPhone interface to begin with (I'm curious to see the results of their research though... since I find it odd that people would so willing give up the tactile feedback of a phone).

About time for this deal to expire, I would think. If I recall correctly it was posted at about 10 or 11 AM CST yesterday and it's about 7 PM CST at the moment. I expected it to run a few hours over, but it's getting up there now. Not that I'm complaining, I'm just anxious to see who won (more than likely not me--I only found one person to sign up and I did just win like 2 days ago...) BTW, did anybody else get Diddy Kong Racing for the DS today?

I actually got rid of my phone with a camera, bluetooth, etc. not too long ago because the signal/call quality was crap, and I didn't use half those features. I now just have a basic Nokia phone that does one thing (make calls) but does it very well. I'm mostly interested in the iPhone for the whole multi-touch interface since I've been wanting to take a crack at developing some multi-touch software apps... Of course, at the moment I can't do that with the iPhone either, but I'm assuming somebody will crack it so that I will be able to do that... We have a multi-touch screen that we developed at my grad school, but it's not as nice as the one developed at that NY university--plus I'm not on that project so I don't really have access to it :(

I just finished my first midterm, so I'm just chillin at the university library till my next one. One thought came up after reading a few comments. Many of you are worried how DealsPlus is going to get the iPhone/$499 to the winner. It is complicated since we don't know the exact specs and release information from apple/cingular. I'm sure as it gets closer to June, dealsplus can continue to post more info about how they are going to get the iPhone or money to the winner. The thought that came up was, does Cingular offer gift cards? If they do, DealsPlus can easily purchase a $499 gift card from Cingular and send that to the winner. This way, they will have to spend it at the Cingular store and most likely get the iPhone. This would solve a lot of issues regarding how the winner will get the money/iPhone. Can anyone confirm if Cingular offers giftcards? If not, will apple offer giftcards specific to the iPhone to be used at the cingular store? I think the Cingular gift cards are more plausible though. Let me know what you think.
3 likes vote
ujaas Feb 06, 2007
yea there are cingular gift cards http://www.888extramoney.net/CingularConsumer/index.asp?Message=NoMatch Visit a participating Cingular store to purchase a Gift Card. So the winner can receive a gift card from dealspl.us towards their purchase of the iPhone
3 likes vote
patriotshater121 Feb 06, 2007
That's really not a bad idea. But it sort of kills the iPhone mood as one would use it to pay their bill. Then again its a good giveaway, just not the greatness of the iPhone. Whatever is easy for you guys.

matwat22 Feb 06, 2007

The only potential problem with the gift card is paying the sales tax for the iPhone. Although that really isn't that big of a deal (unless you also have to pay tax on the prize, but I think you only have to pay taxes on prizes if the prize value is $600 or more).
vote
ujaas Feb 06, 2007
the winner i think can spare around $30 - $40 for a FREE iPhone lol but paying tax would be nice. they can ask the winner from which state they are located from but i think we should first clarify with cingular b4 we finalize any thing
vote
mikeisme77 Feb 06, 2007
Yeah, sales tax wouldn't be all that bad. It's just a problem if you have to pay sales tax AND prize tax (the tax on prizes is at least 25% or something ridiculously high--which is why you never take the car, you take the cash instead... unless you already have the cash to cover the tax on the car). But like I said, I think the value is low enough that it should be okay.
vote
ujaas Feb 06, 2007
we dont have to say its a prize, ITS A GIFT!!
vote
mikeisme77 Feb 06, 2007
Actually... that may be possible (although a thin legal line) to get away with... It could be counted as a "thank you" gift for contribution to the site. Or, on an even thinner line, payment to an independent contractor for services rendered. But due to the wording of the post, that would be hard to defend to the IRS/in court (since the wording implies contest). But hey, our legal system is pretty crazy any way, so you never know what you can get away with...

ujaas Feb 06, 2007

The 4GB is 499, so it will be enough. I believe with the new update, 499 will be given to the winner.
vote
ujaas Feb 06, 2007
How do you guys suggest dealspl.us will pay the $499? If they are sold in stores dealspl.us will have to be there. If it is sold online and they buy it, won't the phone bill show up on their credit card bill? So how do you think the winner will recieve the iPhone? This is getting complicated but im pretty sure one of you guys can figure out the solution.
3 likes vote
mikeisme77 Feb 06, 2007
Perhaps they can work out some deal with Apple? So that the phone bill is linked with the winner, but the iPhone itself is paid for by DealsPl.us?
vote
mikeisme77 Feb 06, 2007
Or, since I already have Cingular, they could just give it to me and save themselves the trouble of figuring out how to work it... they can pay for the phone and just link it to my existing account Good luck everybody!

Maybe they can give you the iPhone as a present, because on some sites you can send items to others as presents, maybe Apple will have some kind of feature like that. Or Deals Plus can buy a gift card for $499 and the winner could use that to buy the iPhone themselves.

10 likes vote
mikeisme77 Feb 06, 2007
I am also curious about this, since this is similar to the Wii they gave away (but that specifically said 24 hours). My assumption is that it will run for at least 24 hours, but may run a few hours late (like the Wii one did, which is why I think they changed from 24 hours to 1 day). I would also assume that it would end before midnight (since that would be more than a day and a half. These are all just assumptions/educated guesses. Anybody with an official answer to this question?

My friends know I'm obsessed with contests... so I'm lucky in that they understand (but unlucky in that they still don't sign up... I did get my mother signed up though, so I at least have 1 entry). But the good thing about entering lots of contests is that you tend to win once in awhile, so people think you're lucky (when in reality you just win because you've entered so many contests you're bound to win SOMETHING). But, hey, I'm not complaining--last year I won 2 Samsung MP3 players from the Hope for Education essay contest thing and tickets to a concert and CDs from a radio call in contest; and $126 at the casino (only time I went last year and I was only spending $20 there). Thanks to Dealspl.us so far this year I won a heart frame doll, 2 free pens, a stuffed bear, and an iPod shuffle so far this year (and it's only February).

I've seen some of the rank 5 members with more than one decent prize ($50+), pretty sure any way. It's been a little bit since I've looked though. The smaller prizes (like the bear) are easy to get. The nicer prizes (Wii, shuffle, iPhone, PS3) are harder (obviously), but it should all be random. But still, do those of us who won already care that much if we win again? I mean it's always nice, but we do already have a prize as well... I'm kind of divided on how I feel about the iPhone (the lack of tactile feedback would put an end to my use of it in the car... especially texting... which I shouldn't be doing...) I have my 1 entry though (I finally got my mom, who lives in a different state, to sign up). Good luck to everybody!

so basically this giveaway is for the actual phone only right? if that's the case i think it's a good idea because that is the part that will probably cost the most. i guess you could think of it as your keeping your contract and services and everything except you're getting a huge upgrade at your phone for free.

patriotshater121 Feb 05, 2007
yea that is true. but super_black, the contract will cost you more then the phone. just a correction. but I love the deal with JUST the iphone for free, because I and many others have contracts and they can just change their simcards.

I was thinking that you would give away the phone for free and also some plans like unlimited internet and texting and gps etc so the winner could use the full functionality of the phone. How ever i do not think it is a good idea to give away a free contract beacause people can just abuse that and go over their minutes etc and run up your bill to the thousandths. thats my idea what do the rest of you guys think?
15 likes vote
TheTrueMaster Feb 05, 2007
I think it would be best to just give away the iPhone, without any contract, and leave that up to the winner. Because if you gave away the 2 year contract, you would have to pay extra money for stuff like extra minutes, etc. The winner could easily abuse this system, so I would just give away the iPhone and leave the contract up to the winner.

vote
patriotshater121 Feb 05, 2007
I think that is a much better idea. Its really unsafe with the 2 year contract, because like ujaas said, the bill could become ginormous, as the user would just be on the phone all day, which could lead to almost all the minutes being used up in a week! then having to pay the charges for extra minutes. with the other features that can't happen, because you get the "unlimited" with that.

Dont forget that if the winner was invited by someone, they get one to. So that could costt a lot. The phone by itself should be enough, because they are worth a lot.

xichigox Feb 05, 2007
I agree, the winner should get the iPhone but not a 2-years contracts. A contract would make this much more difficult for the user and dealsplus. What I would suggest is something along the lines of what ujaas is saying. I'm not sure how much internet costs for cingular, but it would be nice if that was covered for at least a year. The only way to do that would be to apply a cash award along with the iphone. But then again, this would just make it too expensive. I think the best thing for DealsPlus would be to just offer the phone itself as the reward. I'm not sure how this would work though, because I'm not sure if you can purchase the phone by itself. Perhaps it would cost more, or DealsPlus would have to sign up to be a 3rd party dealer for Cingular.
vote
klawrence92 Feb 06, 2007
These are some great ideas guys. But I recceomend that someone should contact cingular and/or apple and describe to them the situation we are in. They will probably tell us our possible options. I think whas ujaas said about the internet is ok, but it would be a big hastle for dealspl.us to pay someone else bill for 2 years! LOL. And if worse comes to worser where there is no possible way to provide the iPhone free Dealspl.us can always send cash or money to the winner via PayPal. That way the winner can purchase the iPhone whenever he wants and at his comfort.

aren't at&t and cingular merged now? so wouldnt that mean if u have at&t your service will autmatically switch to cingular? and does at&t do cell phones because im not quite sure about that
vote
patriotshater121 Feb 05, 2007
i am not sure, because u really don't hear of At&T. I believe Cingular is the major company, and thye have merged, so I believe, the answer to your question would be yes.
vote
acs12798 Feb 05, 2007
Here the story with that. A couple years ago cingular bought att wireless. Cingular was owned by BellSouth. So all ATT wireless customer become cingular. Keep in mind at&t wireless was not the same company as AT&T. Then when BellSouth bought AT&T recently, they re branded themselves AT&T because of name recognition. At the same time they are rebranding cingular wireless as AT&T wireless again.

Availability As has been widely rumored for months, Cingular (soon to be AT&T) will be the sole iPhone carrier. Both Apple and Cingular stores will sell the phone starting in June. Europe will get it in the fourth quarter, and Asia will have to wait until next year. Finally, the U.S. gets something first! Good thing we have a few months to save our pennies. The 4GB model will cost $499 with a two-year contract and $599 for the 8GB version (also with a two-year contract). Again, that's a bit high when compared to other carrier-supported music phones such as the Sony Ericsson W810i, particularly since you're locked into a contract with one carrier. Design To be successful, an Apple phone has to sport an iconic Apple design--the Rokr's dull design did it no favors. Fortunately, Apple fulfilled our expectations this time with a smooth design and an innovative interface. Say goodbye to traditional cell phone buttons--this phone is all touch screen, all the time. With only one hardware control (a "home" key), iPhone's real estate is dominated by a huge, 3.5-inch display. From what we call tell, the device looks beautiful with a resolution of 320x480x160 pixels per inch (the highest iPod resolution yet, according to Jobs). The videos and photos look great, and we love that the "smart" screen shifts automatically to a landscape orientation when you start to play a video. One giant touch screen controls the phone, and no stylus is needed ("Yuck," Jobs said). Use your fingers to type messages and e-mails on an onscreen keyboard--Jobs promises onscreen typing will be faster than on a standard smart-phone keypad, but we'll believe that theory when we actually get a device in our hands. (And speaking of yuck, what about all that finger grease?) But we admit the scrolling feature looks especially promising as Jobs had only to slide his finger across the display. Of course, such a large display makes for a large phone: the iPhone measures 4.5x2.4x0.46 inches. No, it won't slide into smaller pockets, but it joins the similarly sized Palm Treo 750, and its weight (4.8 ounces) is mostly standard for a handset of this size. Of course, the slim profile is noteworthy as well. We're a tad surprised Apple has jumped on the thin phone bandwagon, but trim design, after all, is the cell phone trend of the day. As Jobs made clear, iPhone is thinner than both the Motorola Q and the Samsung BlackJack. Features Though we're pleased Apple made it a quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world phone, we're disappointed the iPhone's data support tops out at 2.5G EDGE networks. Considering the multimedia-friendly feature set, the omission of any 3G compatibility is a bit bizarre, particularly since Cingular now offers UMTS and HSDPA. We wouldn't normally spend much time on voice mail, but Apple pulled a new trick out of its hat with Visual Voicemail. Rather than forcing you to call your voice mail and waiting to browse through multiple messages to hear the one you want, Visual Voicemail displays all the messages you have in a list, similar to an e-mail in-box. All you have to do is select the message you want and listen away. It's tough to truly evaluate the iPhone's capability as a music and video player without some hands-on experience, but a cursory look at the product shots and details gives us some idea; that, and the fact it's closely related to the highly rated iPod music player iPod. In short, the iPhone is sure to offer an easy-to-use media playback interface, and the breadth of content offered by iTunes (its compatible service) ensures you'll never be wanting for music or video files. Of course, the touch-screen interface will take some getting used to for users who are accustomed to the iPod's Clickwheel. The iPhone, which will be offered in 4GB and 8GB capacities (flash memory), doesn't have any restrictions on how much of that memory you choose to fill up with media content--no 100-track limit, as is the case with the Motorola Rokr. The convergence device also takes a step away from its iPod brethren by offering a built-in mic for audio recordings. And unlike most cell phones, the iPhone offers a standard 3.5mm audio jack, which will work with all mainstream stereo headphones. There's no FM radio but that's nothing new from Apple. One thing is for certain: the 3.5-inch wide-screen display is much better for full-length movie viewing than the 5G iPod's comparatively paltry 2.5-inch screen. And Apple's new partnership with Paramount really helps to fill out the movie category in iTunes. If there's anything we have to complain about, it's that the video player isn't offered as a standalone device, sans the phone capability, (which is sure to mark up the premium on the price). Of course, if that happens, we'd like to see something above the max 8GB of memory. iTunes content and video load on the phone via a USB computer connection--unfortunately, as far as we know there are no wireless downloads--and the iPhone comes with an iPod connector. Beyond the music player, the iPhone runs on Mac OS X and promises a 2-megapixel camera, a photo-management tool that rotates the display for landscape photos (like with videos), support for Google Maps, conference calling, a speakerphone, and text and multimedia messaging. We imagine there will be personal organizer applications as well, but Jobs kept mum on such fine details. Connectivity options also look promising with stereo Bluetooth (thankfully), Wi-Fi (a huge plus), POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail, and a Safari Web browser. The free push Yahoo e-mail app looks especially cool since we won't have to wait for syncing with a PC. The iPhone also comes with some unique sensors that detect how you're using the phone and change the display accordingly. A proximity sensor knows when you bring the phone to your ear and then dims the screen and shuts off the touch screen. The ambient light sensor adjusts brightness and saves power, and the accelerometer knows when to switch between landscape and portrait orientation. Outlook After months of iPhone speculation, we were sick of the device even before it came out. But now, well, we have to admit it's quite lovely. The vivid display is especially attractive, and we like the sleek, minimalist design. The touch screen may involve a learning curve, but we're excited to try it out. The iPod functionality will no doubt draw many, and in particular, we're glad to see world phone support, the Yahoo e-mail app, stereo Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. On the downside, we were hoping for wireless iTunes music downloads. And it's too bad Apple stopped short of 3G support. Also, we're hoping that Apple introduces a standalone touch-screen iPod without the phone element as not everyone will want a convergence device. And here's the biggest caveat: Phones are only as good as the calls they make, so we'll have to wait for our final assessment once we get a review product. As for battery life, Apple is promising five hours for calling or video and 16 hours in music mode. Overall, however, and despite the high price, we predict an iPhone success. The iPhone will garner interest simply because it exists and, as such, has great potential to move music phones into the mainstream. Nokia's Xpress music phones and Sony Ericsson's Walkman handsets present a strong challenge on some level, but Samsung's new Ultra Music probably stands to take the biggest hit if the two devices go head to head.

My main problem is finding good deals to submit and the ones I find tend to not be good enough to make it to the front page. I guess I'm just not as good at finding deals as you ;-) But, luckily, when it's time for me to find a deal to spend money on, Dealsp.us has me covered (thanks to all of you who ARE good at finding these deals).

Yeah, I have it on my web site (especially since I won the iPod Shuffle over the weekend--I had to give a shout out of thanks to DealsPl.us), and I have a Slashdot post about it (it was in a story about OSS cell phones so it was semi-relevant and didn't get modded down, last I checked... the story was also slightly older though, so that might've been why I was safe. I have the karma to burn anyway). And I've had 17 clicks, but only 2 friends (1 who signed up because she was interested in the Wii, and 1 was my girlfriend who signed up because I told her it was a great place to find out when DS Lites were in stock--she's gotten hers now), and my little brother signed up because he knows I find out about a lot of computer hardware deals on here. I rave about it all the time (about how I got a free Senseo thanks to somebody posting about the Senseo giveaway; free Office Pro 2007 thanks to a post about that; other deals I find; and now these contests), but they're still reluctant to sign up (although I know a few of them do crawl through the site and look at deals, so that's good at least).

i am actually working really hard to get to level 4 and then level 5. I hope i can win prizes and help more people out when i get to level 4 and 5. I have been constantly searching for deals but they all just seem to be taken. But soon enough I kno i will be able to get my level 4 and 5. I have been observing many front page deals are flashdrives. i am trying really hard to find flash drive deals on buy.com and other various sites that generally have great deals. I cant wait for my level 4 and level 5. I kno i will get there eventually. I love this site. This is a great place to socialize, find deals, and of course help others. so i think i should be more active in groups as ujaas has mentioned earlier. I am trying to think of more creative contest ideas that would be fun for old and new members like my self.

i also know that you in particular were a victim of someone minussing comments. hopefully when the admins look at your score they can overlook that part because it was unfair. as long as you show your commitment to this site by continuing to submit deals, dealpl.us will recognize that and you will move up in the rankings over time.

I've been seeing a lot of insightful and helpful comments this time. It's rewarding to know that you can be of help to someone and that they actually take your comments seriously and try to improve. This will get more users on the right track and less confused which in the long run results in much more active contributing to this site.

I'm sure they'll do that soon. They usually end up doing that after the contest starts up and they can straighten everything out.

Just a question, since im not good with these things. You need to buy a seperate plan to use the fone rite? And if the person you invited wins, do you win to?

if you want to use it as a phone, you have to buy a plan with cingular.

Thanks noodle, im verizon now, but theres no way im a loyal customer to them with all the things they block and charge for. They charged me $10 to transfer contacts from my old fone to my new one!

wow i have verizon 2. I want to go with cingular ASAP but i am not sure what phone to get. Verison charges way too much and NO roll over minutes. I know their service is the best but cingular is not significantly worse. That cancelation of contract for free was hope for me to get cingular. Now if i win the iPhone i am definatly going with CINGULAR! I wanted a do it all phone and I think the iphone was very good. But that is way above my spending range. I was looking into the P990i and I found a deal for $300. But now since this contest came up im like SCREW THAT, iPhone it IS!

i was wondering, if a person had at&t thay could sign up under at&t since cingular is merging with them, rite? im not sure how it would work, so if anyone could clarify that for me

ujaas Feb 05, 2007
didnt cingular buy our at&t? i think i read somewhere that they are thinking of switching the cingular name to at&t bcuz of their international reputation. so i think it will work under at&t but you can always unlock it if it doesnt for some reason.

i think the only people that can win this is a user with a high rank. there hasn't been a user that has won anything with just a level 1. =/

All the more reason to work on increasing your level. There's been a couple level 2 members win. Getting there isn't too hard either. Work at it, and you'll increase your chances in most giveaways.

That is true level 1 users haven't won. Well if you look at it from a top users perspective it seems fair only top users win. By top user i mean level 3 - 4 and higher. The top ranking users have worked very hard for dealspl.us and it's community. They have submitted deals, made groups, made insightful comments, and recruited new members to the community. Doing all of the above isn't easy, but as in real life; hard work pays off. So it would not seem fair to the hard working members for a member who hasn't worked hard enough to earn a level three to win a big prize.

looks like i have no chance of winning this iphone then... but i think dealspl.us is great, and i have just started to become an active member. maybe ill get lucky later then.

Thats great to hear man. I dont think it will be luck later on if you become active. Don't worry there will be many more great prizes. Just look at the picture, there is a huge Flat Panel on it. If you work hard before then I think you will have a good chance of winning. After about 4 months I joined this site I won a shuffle. So i worked hard for those 4 months and it payed off.

And also the reason that dealplus has these giveaways is to urge users to work hard for it. I believe that once every new giveaway starts every single person is on an equal playing field and from there it's all about who wants it the most and is willing to work hard for it.

another excellent point. This giveaway is an incentive for users to work harder to make this the BEST deals site on the web. dealspl.us knows the challenge for becoming the best deals site on the web is impssible with out hard working users. Unlike other deal sites, DealsPl.us rewards their users for their hard work and effort rather than ripping them off.

yes i agree with ujaas. i know i am level one, and just joined today, and ujaas apparently has been a long time member! so it really wouldn't be fair if I won, because he's been working harder for a longer time dealsplus is so great because it does a lot of deals again (2 wiis, 2 xbox360s, like 1000 shuffles). i mean i really want to win, but its a lot more fair that the higher levels win it because they have been contributing more to the site. i really hope i can be on a high level one day too. of course, us level onners shudnt be disappointed because there are many good giveaways posted every week!

It's not a giveaway, then. It's compensation for promoting, updating, and working on this website. Instead of having a team of paid workers, they rely on the community to update their site and then they are offered the chance of winning. "Giveaway" implies random selection. This is not a giveaway.

Definition of Giveaway taken from dictionary.com: 1. an act or instance of giving something away. 2. something that is given away, esp. as a gift or premium: A pocket calculator was offered as a giveaway with every new subscription to the magazine. 3. a radio or television program on which prizes are given away to contestants in a question-and-answer game. 4. a tax law or other legislation designed to benefit one segment of the population, one area or state, etc.: a giveaway that benefited only the very rich. 5. an unscrupulous deal, esp. one that benefits some while defrauding others. 6. Sports. any careless loss of possession of a ball, puck, etc., or other offensive lapse that leads to a score by the opponent.

Therefore, a Giveaway does not imply random selection. In some cases, a random selection could be used to determine who to give it to, but it does not always mean it has to be that way. Giveaway simply means that they are giving something away. How they choose to determine a winner is up to them. Vin is saying anyone can win, a level 1 or a level 5. So don't lose hope! Besides, you have nothing to lose, because if you don't win, it's not like you paid money to enter this contest. Enjoy your time on DealsPlus and invite some friends while doing so! Good luck!

While the prizes are compensation for what you have done I think that the value of these rewards are more than compensating what you have done. Think about how much some of these items are worth. I'm not sure what the average weekly salary is in the US is but to be rewarded with something like this for some, is many days, possibly weeks of stress and hard work at their job. With this type of giveaway at least while you're working to earn it you can take pride in the fact that you are helping those who run this site and those who visit this site find better deals on items they struggle so hard on to find at a discount. I think that when you look at what you give and what you get in return, the prizes definitely outweigh the work, making it well worth yours, mine, and everybody elses time.

The only problem is that they have their own family and do not have time to contribute as much as I do in my free time. But this site I think will be a huge asset to them.
