WHAT A STEAL! I have had a brother MFC in the past and it worked great for about 4 years. After that, almost any printer that is well used will start to die off and it's harder to find the ink etc. Technology moves to fast to keep them too long!!!

@fuqbmbaecycr: You have a laser from Brother, not an inkjet, so that may explain the huge difference in our experiences, though I find it hard to believe the same company would be competent with one technology and not with the other. I had the MFC3220C, which if you Google it, you'll see I'm not alone in my contempt for the printer and its manufacturer. On Amazon, the number of one star reviews is more than double the sum of the 2 - 5 star reviews. I'm glad (and surprised) that yours are working well for you, and hope they continue to do so. I'll stick with Canon for inkjets and Samsung for lasers.

I bought the model below this (2140) printer for college courses as well, the thing about it is this comes with a "trial toner" and will be done after about "300ish pages" --> however, you should try to youtube this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPCGZZIdXyM - The toner will last for up to twice as long if you use this trick (the sensor on the toner makes it run out faster than the toner really runs out!! scamartists, but play around them and its a good deal.. --> it is only about 25$ for a new toner online for 1600+ pages before you have to do the trick, and then you can get another ~~600 with using the trick from this video -- SAVE MONEy AND watch the video!! - Enjoy!

I too have experience with several brother printers, as well as two samsung models. All have been perfectly reliable, except for one samsung which died after about 4 years of good service. No problems with the Brother models at all. My mom's 8440MFP still works great after 5 years. All work fine out of the box with Ubuntu.

I have to SERIOUSLY disagree with Fluffy. I have two Brother laser printers in my house -- a MFP and regular deskside. I bought multiple for work. I had my parents get one. I've found the value to be excellent and the quality on-par with the best of them. When I need new printers, it's my default brand. When I got my sister-in-law a Samsung for college, it turned out to be crap. Could have been just a bad apple, I don't know. I highly recommend Brothers.

Wait a minute! Why does this link go to a Brother laser printer? I wouldn't buy a Brother printer if it was the only brand on earth. I've had nothing but bad luck with a Brother multifunction printer. Even while being serviced under warranty, the repair depot said other parts failed as they worked on it. Then it failed again a little more than a month after I got it back, and the warranty had run out. Even while it worked, it wasted ink with needless daily cleaning cycles that you could not disable. This was an inkjet, not a laser printer, but after the experience I would never consider anything made by Brother.

I've had a Samsung ML-1740 laser printer for years now, and it works as good as it did when it was new. I buy cheap refilled toner cartridges online and they work just fine. Samsung provides free but not open source Linux drivers for its laser printers, a definite plus. Reliable, inexpensive to own and operate, Windows, Mac & Linux support - what's not to like?
