Gaylord, Michigan: Alpine Village in the Snow Belt of the Northern Lower Peninsula
“Indoors” might as well be a four-letter word in Gaylord. There are so many outdoor activities in this northern Lower Michigan town that residents and visitors spend most of their time in the fresh air. Swimming in Otsego Lake, hiking, and golfing are popular during the warmer months, but winter is when Gaylord really thrives. The town is located in the region’s snow belt and gets more than 180 inches of snow each year. Hundreds of miles of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails crisscross its wooded terrain. Head to Groen Nature Preserve for some of the most accessible trails—be sure to pick up trail maps at the Gaylord Area Convention & Tourism Bureau beforehand.

The town itself is reminiscent of an Alpine village. Gingerbread buildings housing specialty shops, boutiques, and restaurants line the walkable downtown. The chalet-style architecture dates back to the 1930s, when the private Otsego Club & Resort was built and community leaders adopted the theme throughout town.
