I would actually look into getting a used iPod Touch off of eBay. There are some really great free games available for download from the App Store. I have seen my 4 year old niece spend hours playing on an iPod Touch. Good luck!

I definitely agree with jshelton12. Invest in an iPod touch, other handheld consoles are similar in price but the games are expensive. There are a few great free apps for the iPod touch and the games are generally ranging from Free-$7.99 (I wouldn't buy a game more than $7.99 for the iPod touch but that's just me). Plus, there are a wide range of apps which includes a lot of educational games. So definitely invest on an iPod touch.

Ok, I have a 3 year old and 7 year old. They love the DS lite. You can get a brand new one for $79 or $89 at Walmart or Amazon. If you want used, Craigslist in my local area has a bunch posted with games for pretty cheap (and you can negotiate). I have an Iphone and yes my kids love playing games on it, but I am not sure if you are going to find one for $50 or less. Good Luck and I you can find something for them.

ipod Touch was what i was thinking as well. i believe it's now the current leader in portable gaming consoles or something like that. apps usually cost 99 cents and many are free =). for that age range, i don't think you need to get the newest iPod touch out there..good luck =).

For quality games for children, nothing else comes close to the DS consoles (DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL). Here is a list of 3 dozen well-reviewed games (list price $20 - $35)for children under 10:

Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Mario Kart DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Yoshi's Island
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem
Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Kirby Super Star Ultra
Kirby Canvas Curse
Super Scribblenauts
Pokemon HeartGold
Pokemon SoulSilver
Pokemon Platinum
Pokemon Diamond
Pokemon Pearl
Picross DS
Picross 3D
Soul Bubbles
Viva Pinata Pocket Paradise
Chocobo Tales
Dragon Quest Heroes - Rocket Slime
Chibi-Robo! Park Patrol
Elebits - The Adventures of Kai and Zero
Boing! Docomodake

Your 5 year old may especially like Soul Bubbles. To research games, Gamespot reviews games, links to other sites, and gives an overall score based on web and print sources.

i also have a DSi and it's great. there are so many fun games. as for portability, it should work for the age group, but i personally enjoy the ipod Touch moreso just because it fits easier into my pocket.

for the price, i think the better value is in the iPod Touch, however for the age, i think DSi might be a better idea. i don't know if you want to give such a young one such a high tech toy right now. don't get me's cool, but i see so many kids nowadays with their cell phones texting away. the iPod Touch can do a lot..possibly more than you'd want your 4-5 years old and 10 year old doing =P.

This is probably off the subject, but I think that all of these game consoles and video games have almost caused boardgames to be extinct. When I was growing up, I loved playing boardgames. I love monopoly and scrabble. Back to your question, I think the best place to look would be on Amazon or eBay. Amazon has a really good return policy, so I would check out what they offer.

i buy a lot of things off of's cheaper..a lot of times it's because there's no tax and free shipping..awesome!

as for the board games..yeah..i used to enjoy that, BUT..those were only fun with friends. kinda' hard to play monopoly by yourself :P..

Or with children under five for that matter :)

I agree with everyone. Spend a little more on an ipod touch, and get your kid something that will last. Try going to the store and getting free games for any system, or ones for 99 cents. Some of the best games I have gotten on my ipod touch are free. With an ipod touch, you are getting him a mp3 player, a video player, and a handheld gamesystem in one. Shell out the extra money and get one on black friday. He or she would definitely love it.
