I always recommend Best Buy and purchase the extended warranty too. I did this for my son's iPod Touch. He managed to break his four times in one year and each time Best Buy replaced it on the spot. To me a couple of extra bucks is worth that kind of service.

I tend to purchase my Apple products from Apple -- either new or refurbished -- for the same reason as BigJJ pointed out: the service can't be beat. Even their refurbished items look brand new cosmetically, carry the same warranty, and can be covered by an extended protection plan if desired. I've never had a bad experience.
Most retailers who do carry Apple products exclude them from their coupon offers, so make sure you read the fine print on the offer if you find one that you think might work before you get your hopes up. This time of year, check out the educational discount, or see if any of your associations (work, volunteer organizations, other memberships) offer a discount purchase program through Apple.
For the 32GB iPod Touch, I see no discount in the education store, but it's $281 (as opposed to $299 retail) through one of my corporate purchasing portals. The discount varies per organization.
