When a manufacturer releases a new product, they often release coupons as well. These money-saving coupons encourage consumers to try out the product for little out-of-pocket expense. Obviously, the manufacturers hope that you will fall in love with the new product and then continue to purchase it with or without coupons.

I agree that manufacturers aren't loosing a lot of money from coupons or they wouldn't be putting them out there. I have noticed though that a lot of coupons require you to purchase 2 or 3 of one item now in order to save anything on the coupon, forcing you to make multiple purchases of the same item.

Wow, I hope the accuser in the article always shops at the most expensive stores possible, and always kindly waits until any sale is over before purchasing anything. And God forbid they go shopping on Black Friday or during an after-Christmas sale!
It's just crazy that someone like that thinks there must be a "correct" fixed price for everything, be it at a convenience store or a Walmart, without regard to holidays, seasons, marketing campaigns, etc.

I use coupons. I do feel that it's wrong to try to "cheat" the system though. Using two coupons when it says limit one, etc. That bothers me. Don't get me wrong, I've wanted to do it SOOO often. I read my coupons hoping for a "way out". Just my two cents... which I saved using my last coupon. ;)

Coupons only hurt manufacturers when people abuse them. People like couponers raiding shelves is not good for business. But giving a person a discount in the hope that they like it and buy it again is good for business.

@bbattag people "raiding shelves" is not people abusing coupons people using them on items it is not intended for or making unathrized copies is abuse... People buying all the items off of the shelf is good for the business because they get a big fat check from the manufacture with the amount of the coupon + 7 cents per coupon for processing and its good for manufactures because first of all they get to write it off as an advertising expenses and secondly it gets people to try out the product and if they like it they will tell a friend and even buy it without a coupon at a later date... I know I have defiantly tried products I would have never tried if I didn't have a coupon for it and have gotten hooked and buy them at full price all of the time now...
