Yes, everywhere I have lived had a charge for recycling pickup (if pickup offered at all)(southeastern USA). I currently do not pay for trash service as a separate fee, but have at all other homes.

You pay for it everywhere, it just depends on whether or not it is a separate charge on your bill.

In Los Angeles you pay about $20 a month for trash pick-up. Seeing as I am always after getting a good deal, I do my best to generate as much trash as possible to get my money's worth.

Depending on the company (I guess) you either pay a flat fee or buy a "tag" book and tag each bag.

I live in South Louisiana. My parish (county) doesn't pay trash removal. But the one nearby has it included in their water bill. Unfortunately we have no recycling pick-up.

I live in VA too when i was in Southern VA they made you buy a big trash can with a decal that lasted the year but you could only fill that trash can they would not pick up anything else...In northern VA it is part of my HOA dues and they take anything... when i lived in Massachusetts I did not have to pay for trash when i lived in the city but i did when i lived in the hill towns... lol wow long answer but w/e :)

Thanks for the replies all. I was gathering my trash yesterday, to put outside and wondered how many people pay for trash to be picked up? I lived in Boston for awhile and trash pick up was free and twice a week. So when I moved to the suburbs paying for trash was something completely new!
Now I pay $230 a year plus for $1 or $1.50 each and every bag I put out (depending on size)and buy tags or stickers for large items. Some towns around here are more expensive and then some towns have no pick up at all, they have to bring their trash to the dump!

No charge for either trash or recycling, even huge items in PG County Maryland. It's always been a government-run service where I've lived. I imagine that charging directly for these services is why truckloads of trash get illegally dumped on the roadside, despite huge fines if caught.
