8 0
  • Countless consumers have been duped by fake gift cards and coupons, with the holiday season looming there's no doubt these fraudulant offers will increase.
Before you provide any personal information online  read these tips on how to spot fake coupons and gift cards:
  • The company's name and contact information should be printed on the coupon.
  • Look for a bar code and an expiration date. If either one is missing, it might be a fake. Coupons usually have a specific expiration date.
  • You might be able to spot a phony or doctored coupon by checking the supposed value of the coupon with its barcode -- the 10th and 11th digits should match the value.
  • Never pay for anything that is supposedly free.
  • Steer clear of coupons and gift cards offered through sites you are not familiar with. If you're unsure of a company's credibility, you can you check its history and reputation with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
  • Verify a gift card's balance before you buy it. A trustworthy seller should be able to provide a card number that will allow you to confirm its balance.
  • Check the CIC (Coupon Information Corporation) website to see a list of known counterfeit coupon scams.
Still in doubt? Contact the retailer directly to determine whether a coupon or gift card is legitimate.

Excellent advise, xptrish! As we near Black Friday and the shopping frenzy begins there will be a lot of unsavory folks just waiting to lure you into scam sites and offers... stick with what you know and check DP regularly for alerts and True Codes and Sales so you can shop with confidence.
