Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

12 0
  • It has been 2 weeks and 2 days since Hurricane Sandy and today I experienced 2nd hand the pain of the people in the disaster areas. Watching it on TV is very different that hearing it from someone who has been to the area.
  • My husband works for a company that was providing relief efforts in Far Rockaway (a major disaster area) today  The beach and the boardwalk is gone. Cars are on the sidewalk. Buildings look like they blew up. Residents still have no power.  He was there with a team of 10 people serving hot beverages, handing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, warm clothing and household essentials like soap and toilet paper and shampoo. I was really struck by the little help they are getting in these areas. He doesn't even work for a charitable organization. I imagined there would be a lot of charitable organizations in the area providing relief efforts, but they weren't there. They saw a Red Cross van pass by, and didn't even stop to help residents in the area. I hope they had a very good reason for doing that.
  •  I can't help but want to volunteer to help these people that are in desperate need. I don't think there is enough emphasis in the media for a need of volunteers and I am sure there are many people that are there to help, but don't know how except make a donation to Red Cross or drop off clothing at a local collection spot.
  • Any thoughts?
