This is really interesting, but if you read the paper (Full text here: http://aem.asm.org/content/77/17/6076.full.pdf), you'll learn that these fungi degrade a specific plastic, polyester polyurethane (PUR). Bottles and wrappers, stuff that is typically found in landfills, is typically made of polyethylene, polystyrene (any many others) as these are considerably cheaper than other plastics. PUR is a bit more expensive and is mainly used in construction rather than disposable consumer products.
Though this is a great experiment and find indeed, people should not assume that this will solve the overfilling landfills worldwide.
Fun fact: this fungus can eat your iPad smart cover since it is made of polyurethane.
