if you're going for a deal..to be honest..i feel like apple doesn't really ever have great deals. however it's all about what you're looking for. what are you trying to get out of the product?

The kinect doesn't have much to offer now due to lack of good games, but it is unique and may have a bright future well beyond gaming.
The ipad has many competitors coming to the tablet market next year with probably better features and cheaper prices.

You can, and will, do much much more with the iPad.

It depends on what you want to use them for. The ipad would be more useful if you are using it for a mix of purposes, both entertainment and possibly for some light reading or work. However, on the other hand, the kinect would be if not entirely, almost entirely for play.
Longevity wise, the kinect would probably last longer as apple constantly comes out with new versions and as becky457 said, the ipad has many competitors providing more competition and impetus for improvement. The kinect on the other hand, will likely be in its current form for a long time, or at most have an add-on like the motion plus for the wii. The bottom line is that what are you looking for them to use for.

an iPad was on my dad's Christmas list; it was barely discounted on Black Friday, and that's the only day Apple typically discounts its well-selling items

You'll probably use an iPad way more.
