They did this to combat people "sharing accounts". People in college dorms would just use other people's account so a whole dorm would pay 9.95 a month for who knows how many views.
Netflix is a good company that still offers a great service at an amazing price. You would have to pay $50 a month minimum for cable or satellite. If you don't like it, then cancel your service.

Actually, if you only used their streaming (like me), your price dropped 12% from $8.99 to $7.99/month. I do not believe this multiple device policy is new. I can also confirm, at least in my home, simultaneous streaming does in fact work (2 devices) under the $7.99 plan.
As of last night I can confirm, that I cannot stream to more that one device at a time. I know this is not a new policy. They are starting to enforce it though. I am not a college student. I am not sharing it outside my home. I am considering dropping it.
I think it's been enforced pretty arbitrarily since the beginning. Even in the old thread there are some who get the limit/error, and some who do not. I've never had a problem (as of this morning still - still works great). Flags could also be plan and/or content specific. If your prices were "raised", we're not on the plan.

Netflix Declines Most Since 2004 After Losing 800,000 U.S. Subscribers
Netflix Inc. (NFLX) dropped the most in seven years after the video-rental service said it lost 800,000 U.S. subscribers in the third quarter, more than expected, and predicted more cancellations over a price increase.
In case you missed it:

Netflix raising prices as much as 60%
Video subscription service will no longer offer a $9.99 plan that lets users watch an unlimited number of movies online and rent one DVD at a time. Instead, those who want that combination will have to pay $15.98 a month.
when did this start? that sucks if it's true.
and jdswirsky - it means you can only have one device set up on your account. why do you use more than one device? we have an xbox in our living room that we watch netflix on, a wii in our bedroom, and i have a internet-connected dvd bluray at my parents', all of which i use the same netflix account on.
