For point and shoots, Canon has some amazing options that best Nikon in my experience (like nimrodboy said).
For entry level DSLR photography, I don't think it will matter much. They should be pretty competitive in features, performance and price.
For pro photography, I think Canon is the way to go. They have better lenses for the price, and more are available (both new and used).
My suggestion is to go try out a few models in the store. Spec sheets can only tell you so much. The cameras all have a slightly different feel, and you may prefer one model over another after using them.

IMO, I like Nikon DSLR and Canon point and shoot depending on your experience level . I have them both. My Canon point and shoot performing wells for years when I don't want to carry the extra weight and Nikon DSLR takes amazing shots when you want detail and special effects.
