It is actually better than I was expecting. There isn't much of a jump that can be made just yet on the 4, so a S version like the change from the 3G to the 3GS makes a lot more sense than a tiny change and trying to call it the iPhone 5.
If you need a phone now, I think you would be fine with either the S2 or the 4S. Someone with a more recent phone would probably want to wait a little longer.

No, plenty beats iphones. We just have the technology in this country. I like my iphone but take a walk through the gamer district in Japan sometime and you will realize how far behind we are in technology in the USA. Iphones are a joke in Japan and they are given free to military and students.

I think the 4S is awesome..but I feel like it's a mental game with many. I feel like if they had just called it the iPhone 5..people would be googoo gaga over it, but since it has the same name, people are disappointed. I mean..seriously..the upgrades are pretty darn sweet..and it makes sense for Apple to not change the frame since the iPhone 4 has only been out for a year.
It's the same concept with a car. They don't change the body frame annually..rather, they just make improvements and then every 4 years or so..blam!..new body design. People all over the net are talking about how it's not worth all the hype..but seriously..it's those same people that probably created that hype. It's like people want a flying car..ain't gonna' happen..if I gave you a brand new car..you'd appreciate that you have a car..not disappointed that it's not a little bit bigger or that it doesn't fly..
To me..the phone rocks!

@nimrodboy3: "if I gave you a brand new car..you'd appreciate that you have a car..not disappointed that it's not a little bit bigger or that it doesn't fly.." This is definitely true. But like you said, that's if you GAVE me a brand new car. If someone gave me an iPhone (which someone did, actually --my current iPhone 3G), then I would not/did not complain. But Apple is selling these things for at least $200 a pop, so I think people have the right to be a little critical of what they're thinking of buying.
But I certainly get your point though. People want the world, and they want it now. Still, it's not completely the consumers' fault for all the hype. I guess my main beef is that for a company like Apple who prides themselves on being a groundbreaking company, they certainly set the bar really high that I don't think they reached themselves this time, while everyone (including myself) was expecting them to wow us again.

@toast: i see your point..and i agree to some extent..but i still feel like the iphone is getting more hate than it deserves. i think the part that seems annoying to me is that most of the complaints i hear from sites is that it looks the same. i just wonder if it looked different, but didn't have all the new cool features..would it be just as disappointing?
you brought my analogy of the cars..and you are correct..if it was given..then that'd be awesome..but to have the buy the same thing..why do so? yet..people do this all the time with laptops..or even an ipad has the same concept.

@nimrodboy3: Not sure I understand your reply to my reply to your analogy. Sorry, do you mind rephrasing that?
No disagreements there regarding the people whining that it looks the same. If it looked differently and had the same new features, I would be just as bummed if not a little more (since it'd feel like Apple would just be trying to make it seem novel). But I can see other people caring only about the cosmetic differences.

@toast: =P...my analogy of the car being given to you..and you replied that it was GIVEN to you..then it'd be a different deal..but here with the phone..you have to purchase it..so it's a different ball game..and i was trying to switch the analogy to laptops and ipads and other stuff of the same nature..on the outside, they usually look the same, but people are willing to purchase the newer models even though they look the same...and it's 'cuz usually the specs are improved or what not..
hopefully that makes more sense :P..
