Unsurprisingly, Amazon Prime Day 2017 has set a new sales record. Analysts at JP Morgan estimated that the company was projected to reach $1 billion in revenue during the 30 hours of Prime Day - a 55% increase from 2016’s Prime Day performance - so news of Amazon surpassing sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday came at no surprise. History was made for Amazon across multiple categories according to their press release, so check out some of the most noteworthy records:

  • Prime Day 2017 experienced a 60% growth compared to the same 30 hours during Prime Day 2016.

  • The biggest number of new Prime memberships happened on July 11th, more than on any single day in Amazon history.

  • More than 50% growth in the number of Prime members making a purchase on Prime Day.

  • The Echo Dot was the most popular purchase among Prime members, in addition to being the best-selling product from any single manufacturer in all categories across Amazon worldwide.

  • Prime Day was the biggest sales event ever for Amazon devices globally, with record sales for Echo, Fire tablets, and Kindle devices. Amazon Echo devices, in particular, were purchased seven times more globally than on Prime Day last year.

  • More than 60% sales growth by small businesses and entrepreneurs.

  • The Element 55-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV - Amazon Fire TV Edition was the best-selling TV offer in Amazon history, and it sold through a record number of units in under four hours.

  • Stillhouse Lake was the most downloaded Kindle Unlimited book and “Something Just Like This” by the Chainsmokers and Coldplay was the most streamed song on Amazon Music in the days leading up to Prime Day.

In the U.S., the most popular themes on Prime Day were Techies, For the Home, and Home Chefs. More than 50,000 TP-Link Smart Plugs, 200,000 women’s dresses, 200,000 lightbulbs, and over 100,000 items from Amazon Launchpad startups were purchased by Prime members. However, the most popular items were the Instant Pot DUO80 7-in-1 Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker and the 23andMe DNA Tests for Health + Ancestry. If you didn’t believe the speed of Prime Now, you have good reason to start believing now. Prime Now orders of snacks, writeable DVD packs, and a Samsung Internal SSD made from members in Sunnyvale and Berkeley, California and Kirkland, Washington were delivered in just 12 minutes.

Globally, Prime members shopped across 13 countries, and they saved hundreds of millions of dollars on their purchases thanks to Prime Day deals. What was bought in excessive abundance? Toys. More than 3.5 million to be more exact. Outside of the U.S., some of the most popular products were the SanDisk Ultra Fit 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive, the PlayStation Plus Membership, and the Game of Thrones - The Complete Season 1 to 6 Blu-Ray. Moreover, the Amazon app was used by tens of millions of customers this year, and purchases made via the app doubled compared to 2016.

Needless to say, Amazon Prime Day 2017 was an Internet phenomenon that redefined success on a global scale. Although we don’t know the exact record-breaking sales numbers, something tells us it wasn’t short of the projected $1 billion.
