The end of 2017 is quickly approaching, but we’re still sharing the best and worst things to buy each month. Right now, we’re focusing on October’s best deals. During this month, scope out flights to Europe, camping gear, patio furniture, and more as you’ll find them with steep discounts. However, there are also a few things you should avoid buying this month, so pay attention!

The Best Things to Buy

October is the best month to get these bargains - don’t miss out!

halloween.png Halloween costumes: During the week leading up to Halloween and on Halloween day, retailers will be slashing prices on costumes left and right. You can save anywhere from 20% to 70% off your look for next year. The absolute best day to buy your Halloween costume, however, is actually November 1st - the day after Halloween. You’ll find savings as big as 75%, but you can still get a good deal on a last minute Halloween costume for this year!

luggage-512.png Flights to Europe: October is the start of off-season travel to Europe. It runs until April, and according to travel expert Rick Steves, during these few months, you can find cheaper airfare, more affordable accommodations, shorter lines, and fewer tourists.

patio icon Patio furniture: Now that the weather is getting cooler and the holiday season is approaching, big box stores and garden centers are eager to get rid of their patio furniture, garden decor, and the like in order to make room for winter products and holiday decor. Look for up to 70% off original and sale prices.

denim icon  Jeans: While September obviously has tons of great deals because of back-to-school shopping, October is just as good (if not better) in terms of sales on jeans. This is because most retailers still have a good amount of denim leftover from September, and need to move the remaining inventory to make room for the new stuff coming in. You should be able to score up to 75% off even the most popular brands.

camping icon Camping equipment: From tents to fishing poles to coolers, this is the perfect time of year to find 40% to 60% off camping gear. October is also ideal because you can probably still get some use out of this stuff camping and enjoying the great outdoors before the weather gets too cold!

air conditioner icon Fans and air conditioners: Just like with patio furniture and camping gear, people don’t have much need for air conditioners once fall time hits. As the need for space heaters increases, the need for fans and air conditioners decreases and so does the price.

The Worst Things to Buy

It’s best to hold off on purchasing any of the products on this list. Patience is everything!

x.png Cold weather apparel: It’s getting cold and you’re probably looking to invest in some cold weather clothing, but with higher demand comes higher prices. We suggest you bundle up in last year’s coats and sweaters or wait until Black Friday because the best deals on this category usually come in January or February. Restocking the year prior is always your best bet.

x.png Electronics: Unsurprisingly, rock bottom prices on electronics can be found on Black Friday. Big electronics items such as TVs, laptops, and new Apple devices are actually some of the worst things to buy in October, and some stores actually raise their prices a bit just so Black Friday prices seem even more appealing. Don’t let your greed for a new television waste you a few hundred dollars.

x.png Appliances: November is the best month for deals on appliances because, you guessed it, Black Friday. Stores like Home Depot, Sears, and Lowe’s will kick off the shopping holiday with slashed prices on appliances throughout the store and site. Keep your eyes peeled for some steep discounts next month.

x.png Gift Cards: It’s quite common to purchase gift cards for people for the holidays - just don’t do it in October if you’re looking to save some money. Again, it’s best to wait until November and December if you’re looking to save a few bucks on gift cards, as this is when most retailers and restaurants push their holiday sales the hardest. Often times, you can find specials like buy $50 and get $10 free.

Just like every other month, there are good things and bad things to buy in October. Stay tuned to see some of the best and worst things to buy in the month of November!
