Did you know that next week, August 23, is known as Cheap Flight Day? If you’re planning your holiday trips, Cheap Flight Day 8/23 is typically when flight fares begin to drop. As summer comes to an end and back to school season is kicking off, the busy summer travel period is finally over and so are the seasonal high airfare prices.

According to, August 23 is a good date to travel and travelers mapping out their flying plans will save, on average, $42 compared to traveling in July. If you’re able to postpone your trip until the next weekend on Saturday, August 27, you should see even bigger drops on airfare. CheapAir labeled August 31 as the cheapest day to travel for this month, and travelers should also see a decline in travel fare through September. (With the exception being Labor Day weekend of course).

ABC News reports that those planning to travel between August and September will see airfare drops anywhere from 10% to as high as 20% off.

So when does this end?

Since leisure travel will begin to decline toward the end of August, with the exception of upcoming Labor Day, you should still be able to book fairly inexpensive travel fares through September and October. Fares will start to increase again over Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays but so long as you follow the golden rule of booking at least 30-days in advance and plan your travel on less expensive travel days (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays), you’ll be able to avoid the surge in airfare prices.

We recommend setting up price alerts in advance and scour handy travel tools to get the best airfare prices. As usual, having flexible travel dates wouldn’t hurt either! Look further down for our master list of travel tools, hacks, guides and more.
