As a busy mom of six kids in school, back-to-school season can be chaotic if I don’t keep myself and my crew of kids organized. I have lots of ways to keep everyone on track so that we start the new school year off on the right foot!

Check out our Back to School Roundup for the best sales, deals, and coupons being offered this year. Find savvy-shopper-approved deals and discounts at major retailers like NikeKohl's, Target, Walmart, and more.

 Be a smart shopper

  • It may be too late this year, but I always make my kids go through their school supplies at the end of the school year. Rather than just throwing everything out, we see what binders can be re-used and what pencil crayons can be re-sharpened. Salvaging those few items can save lots of back to school shopping money!

  • Again, store this tip away for next year: try to buy your back to school supplies off season. That is one way to avoid the “sold out” signs.

  • Don’t cheap out on a backpack. If you buy one of great quality, your kid will use it for years.

 Organization starts with you

  • Before school starts, book the kiddos in for their dentist appointments, haircuts, check-ups, and any other of those annoying tasks. Doing it in the summer sure beats having to pull them out of school.

  • Make sure everything has a home. Each of my children has a cubby for their agendas and homework. All papers are kept there to avoid the panicked search in the morning as they’re running for the school bus.

  • The morning is no time to get organized. School clothes are picked out the night before, lunches are packed, breakfast table is set. Morning is also no time for making decisions – there is no changing minds about what to wear and there is not a lot of selection offered around breakfast choices.

 Label everything

  • Label all the items that go into your kids' backpack, plus the bag itself! Involve your child in selecting the label design to encourage them to take pride in their belongings, which will further avoid losses. There’s nothing like avoiding those visits to the lost and found bin or closet at your child’s school.

Wonderful tips! Smart move on going though last years supplies and reusing them. It can save us quite a bit of change. Putting everything out the night before can also reduce that hurry stress. That is not a fun feeling at all. I retweeted to my followers. Thank you for the chance. My little great niece sure would love me more.
