By now, most people have a common sense understanding of what foods to stay away from. Sodas, fast food, and processed foods always make the “naughty” list, but which food I particularly hazardous to our health? We’ve put together a list of the top 20 foods you need to give up TODAY.

1. Fast Food Iced Tea

Yum, nothing like antifreeze and runway de-icer. Doesn’t sound appetizing? Well Propylene glycol alginate is a primary ingredient in these products, and it is also frequently found in fast food Iced Teas. To make matters worse, the chemical can directly cause cardiovascular or neurotoxic issues. Try opting for a refreshing grean tea instead.

2. Tylefish

While it’s low price in grocery ores may be tempting, this catch comes with a catch. Tylefish has been ranked the #1 worst fish to eat due to its high amounts of mercury, roughly the equivalent of drinking some battery acid.Trade out the tilefish for some atlantic mackerel, which is equally as affordable, but not so deadly!

3. Microwave Popcorn

This one may break some movie lovers hearts. While organic brands of microwaveable popcorn can actually be a nutritious snack option, major brands like Jolly Time and Jiffy pop contain high amounts of trans fats and actually line their bags with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Name not ringing a bell? PFOA is the same toxic chemicals that are found in Teflon pots and pans. If that’s not enough to scare you off, consider the fact that those same classic flavors are often laced with dicetyle, (DA) which has been known to break down the protective layers of cells that form around the brain. Go for air popped kernels, or choose to make you own popcorn at home instead.

4. Fruit Juice

I know, I know. Fruit juice is supposed to be good for you, right? Not so much. Sadly, even all natural juices contain up to 36 grams of sugar per cup, about the nutritional equivalent of 4 Krispy Kreme Donuts. To make matters worse, most of the sweet flavor doesn’t even come from natural sugar, it come from fructose which results in some serious belly fat. Go for a glass of water instead and skip the sugar rush.

5. Chicken Nuggets

You already know that chickens don’t have nuggets, so can you really be expecting anything food from this one? Chicken nugget mix contains a host of harmful ingredients including several synthetic ingredients like red #40 and diglycerides. These chemicals are added to the mix to keep nuggets from going bad during long stretches in truck freezers (up to months). Choose to make your own breaded and baked chicken strips at home. Buh-bye nuggets!

6. Candy

This one shouldn’t come as a shock, you’ve known candy was bad for you since you were a kid. But do you know why it’s so bad for you? Those bright, happy candy coated shells (like those found on M&M’s and Butterfingers) are jammed pack with Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No.6. Recent studies have found that such chemicals can promote Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in children. The candy chemicals have already been banned in countries like Norway and Sweden, perhaps it’s time for us to follow! Try replacing your usually candy fix with organic/all natural candy option.

7. Sugary Cereal

Sugar has become known as “legal heroine” in the health care world, and we are feeding it to our children by the spoonful. Not only are classic children’s cereal almost entirely made up of sugar, but they also include chemicals like Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) and BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole), which have been banned in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the UK for being considered a carcinogenic. Skip the cartoon boxes and go for low-sugar cereal options instead.

8. Diet Sodas

Remember when you thought ordering a diet coke was making the healthier choice? Man, were we all fooled. Diet sodas contain flame retardants, cancer causing chemicals, and fake sugars that can actually INCREASE weight gain.The aspartame found in diet sodas actually raises glucose levels, which in turn causes your liver to convert excess into fat. Not what you were going for right? How about just ordering a carbonated water with a lemon wedge next time?

It may be time to start taking that coffee black. Coffee Creamer contains titanium dioxide, an ultraviolet radiation blocker. So next time you can’t find he creamer, just mix in a bit of sun block.Try going for organic soy milk instead.

10. Processed Meats

It’s best to think twice before packing the kids snacks. Processed meats, like prepackaged sliced deli meat, can actually put your life at risk. The high amount of process sugar can increase the risk of developing diabetes, thyroid and colon cancer. The high amounts of sodium can also leave you with bloating, and even worse…heart disease. Try going for health meat alternatives or vegetarian sandwiches instead.

11. Deep Fried Foods

You already know they have a negative effect on your waistline but did you know they can also cause depression? The use of hydrogenated oils (usually used in fried foods) have been found to contribute to depression. Want your food crispy? Bake it in the oven. Case closed.

12. Frozen Entreés

Consider the frozen entree aisle the sodium and trans fat section. In order to keep the food tasting “fresh”, this meals are pumped full of sodium that can actually effect your mood. Stay happy and choose organic, low-sodium and low sugar frozen options.

Your favorite take out guilty pleasure can be digging you a slow grave. Chinese food is overloaded with MSG (monosodium glutamate) which has been found to drastically increase appetite and result in serious weight gain. Try whipping up some steamed veggies instead.

14. Restaurant Desserts

No, it’s not the sugar that’s the problem here, not that it’s so great for you either. The fact is most restaurant desserts are oversized and pack a significant amount of sodium. Try going for a small scoop of sorbet instead, if you feel dessert is absolutely necessary.

Energy drinks are packed with sucrose, glucose, and caffeine, all of which are not your friends. If you really need the energy boost, switch to green tea and get some real medicinal benefits.

16. Breakfast Biscuits

It’s early, their fast, and their cheap. I get it. Still, breakfast biscuits are a seriously harmful breakfast option. One biscuit sandwich is the equivalent of swallowing three sticks of butter, causing serious risk for heart disease. Trade the biscuit in for an English muffin and save up to 90 calories on your breakfast sandwich.

18. Sports Drinks

Think sports drink and automatically you will remember visuals of sweaty athletes dripping neon colored sweat, it’s the way our minds have been trained. But seriously, what in nature has that color? Answer: nothing. Sports drinks include wood rosin and an insane amount of artificial dyes which have been linked to cancer and hyperactivity. One again, we suggest sticking with good ole’ water.

But…but…cool ranch!? I know the feeling, but those “bold” flavors aren’t worth eating some of the brands secret ingredients. One of the first ingredients found on the chips label is monosodium glutamate, which has been found to increase appetites and make foods seem taste better than they actually do. You are being trained to be addicted to Doritos. Not fair, right? Go for organic bean chips, or bake your own pita chips at home and say “goodbye” to addictive substances.

20. Oreos

Right in the childhood! As Vegan as they may be (yes, oreos are vegan) the little cookies are filled with palm oil, alkali processed cocoa, and high fructose corn syrup. That may not sound like a big deal, until you realize that such additives were found to be more addictive than both cocaine and morphine in a 2013 study. Ouch. Choose organic almond granola cookies or bake your own! They may not taste like Oreos, but they are much better for you!
