Moving into your first apartment is such a fun and exciting time! Sure, there’s a little bit of stress that comes along, but it’s still super exciting, none the less! One of the most exciting - and the most stressful - parts of the moving process is furniture shopping for your new place. While it’s tempting to go out and buy everything all at once, it’s probably not the wisest thing to do, considering you just paid for a new apartment. Keep in mind that there’s a big difference between what you need for your new apartment and what you want for your new apartment. As a starting point, here are a few must-haves for your new apartment, as well as where you can find them for cheap!
First on the list is a couch. Although couches are pretty expensive for the most part, that doesn’t mean that it’s totally impossible to find one at a reasonable price. One of the best places to get a new cheap couch for your apartment is Urban Outfitters. You probably know Urban Outfitters for their hipster-like clothing, but did you know that they also have an “apartment” line, full of trendy, vintage-style furniture and decor? While quite a bit of their products are a bit overpriced, they definitely do have plenty of affordable options as well, especially if you check out their clearance section!
Another perfect place to look for a new couch for your apartment is the Sears Outlet. Unlike the regular Sears stores, the outlets have couches for up to 80% off, making some of them less than $300! When you’re buying new, you really can’t beat that!
While I suppose you don’t necessarily need a bed to survive, I’m not sure why you would get an apartment without one, so therefore, it’s going on the list of must-haves. When it comes to mattresses, keep in mind that you don’t need to spend thousands on a top-of-the-line mattress, but you also don’t want to throw money down the drain by settling for a cheap one. Your best bet is to get a name-brand mattress that will last you up to 10 years, from a department store like Macy’s, Sears, or JCPenney. One of these usually falls somewhere in the mid-price range, so it won’t totally break your bank, but it won’t have to be replaced in just a few years either.
Unless you plan on getting dressed out of boxes every morning, I think it’s safe to say that a dresser is a must-have for your new apartment. I’d also have to say that the best place to get a dresser for your new apartment is definitely Craigslist, or one of those Facebook Buy/Sell/Trade Groups. On either one of these sites, you can look for one that’s already in great condition at use it as is, or you can settle for one that’s a little less-than-perfect and use your own DIY creativity and skills to make it look and function like new again. It’s really unbelievable what you can do with an old dresser that somebody doesn’t want anymore!
If you’re totally against buying used furniture and you insist on it being brand new, check out IKEA for some great prices on dressers. One of the greatest things about IKEA is that the prices are completely reasonable, and you can find totally awesome apartment-sized furniture and decor in bright and trendy styles and designs.

I’m really not sure why, but garbage cans are ridiculously expensive these days, especially if you want one of those fancy, high-tech trash cans that lock or open by themselves! While those features are pretty awesome, are they really necessary? What’s wrong with a basic, plastic trash can? I mean, you are throwing your garbage in it, afterall. When shopping for your new apartment, I’d say go with a generic trash bin from Walmart or Target. You can find a simple, plastic, 13-gallon bin at Walmart for about $12 or $13, and at Target for as low as $10.
While you could probably get some old, faded, mismatched bath towels donated to you from friends and family members, everybody should have at least one nice, fresh, matching set for their home! A nice matching set just gives your bathroom a clean, put-together, homey impression! An ideal place to look for bath towels is Big Lots, as they have plenty of options - both solid and patterned - for super cheap! Their washcloths start at just $2, hand towels are around $3, and bath towels can be found for as low as $4!

Again, furnishing a new apartment is exciting, but it can also be stressful if you allow it to be. So don’t! First, differentiate between the things that you need right away and the things that can probably wait, and then simply do some research to make sure you’re getting the best deal on everything!
