Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about fancy restaurants and paying an arm and a leg to enjoy your time together. If you and your honey would rather stay in and watch a romantic movie instead, these five flicks are perfect to cuddle up on the couch to.
This is not your typical fairy tale romance. This movie features a daring stable boy, a lovestruck damsel-in-distress princess, and of course an evil greedy prince, but in order for the lovers to finally unite, the two must face unforeseen obstacles including a hilarious trio of pirates, Rodents of Unusual Size in the Fire Swamp, the prince’s torture chamber, and more. This is decidedly a girly movie, but your male counterpart will enjoy the teasing swashbuckling and the slapstick humor throughout the film, which of course ends with a perfect kiss.
Made in 1998 and starring the ever-popular Johnny Depp, “Don Juan DeMarco” is the story of a young man in a mental facility who believes he is the world’s greatest lover. His antics have the nurses falling over one another to help him, and the stories he concocts in his mind are told to his psychiatrist, played by Marlon Brando. As the psychiatrist listens to the boy’s imaginative tales, he learns from them and eventually helps his own marriage to grow. This is a charming story that you’ll want to keep in your DVD library year after year.
Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman star in the 1942 classic love story that takes place in Africa during World War II. The movie has won a number of awards in part for its beautiful writing. The film focuses on a love triangle between Ilsa, her husband Laszlo, and a former lover Rick. In the end, Rick must choose between the woman in front of him and his own morals.
“Love Actually” is one of the most-loved romance films of all time, and certainly has a cult following. If you haven’t yet seen it yet, this Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to watch it. Boasting an all-star cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Laura Linney and Emma Thompson, “Love Actually” is a romantic comedy that interweaves its characters through many stories at once. You and your Valentine should be prepared to laugh along with all the silly moments of the film and fall in love with each of the characters – and one another.
Adam Sandler is the wedding singer who sweeps the cute girl-next-door (Drew Barrymore) off her feet. The story is sweet and funny and the song at the end will have your heart beating double-time. This film is probably more guy-friendly than other romantic comedies out there, and you’ll both be laughing throughout the entire film.
No matter what movie you watch on Feb. 14, be sure it’s one that you and your significant other will enjoy together—a perfect way to spend a night in!
