If you enjoy taking pictures, your interest in photography just might earn you some extra cash. Many businesses use stock photos for their websites, blogs, reports and marketing materials. They often don’t have the time or resources to create their own photos, so they purchase them from various websites such as Shutterstock and Alamy. These websites have hundreds of thousands of photos that they collect from people like you. You don’t necessarily have to be a professional photographer, but if you know how to capture high-quality images, you can sell them for a decent price. Here are some seven websites that will pay $50 or more per image.

1. Shutterstock

Shutterstock is the most popular photo site out there. You can sell your images here for up to $120 each. The price varies based on how long you have been a contributor and how much you’ve made overall. The more you sell, the more you earn per photo download. So the pricing is a little complex, and this is because the company sells subscriptions. Plus, Shutterstock has strict guidelines, so if you want to make money there, you need to provide high-quality, saleable photos. If you can do that, there’s money to be made here, as Shutterstock has shelled out more than $300 million to photographers.

P.S. If you're looking to buy images on Shutterstock, don't forget to visit our Shutterstock coupon page to find deals like saving 10% off your next order! You can also check out Getty Images, iStockPhoto, and Photos.com.

2. Alamy

Alamy is a great site to try because not only do you receive 50% of your profits, but you can sell your photos to other sites as well. Almay does not require exclusive rights, allowing you to maximize your earnings. You can set your own rates, but the amount you earn is based on the license and usage. The average amount you can expect to receive is $90 per photo, but it’s not unheard of to earn $1,000 or more. Alamy has the largest database of images on the Internet, with more than 60 million photos and images on its site.

3. 500px Prime

500px Prime allows you to make money by placing your photos in one of two areas: Core Collection and Prime Collection. The Core Collection consists of photos taken from any camera. You can earn $34 for each web-ready photo and $149 for a print-ready photo. Photos in the Prime Collection are unique photos hand-picked by editors. You earn $49 for web-ready photos and $249 for print-ready photos.

4. Veer

Veer pays based on the size of your images. Smaller ones earn as little as 35 cents per download, while larger ones can garner as much as $5.25 per download. If you have a very popular image, you can easily earn hundreds of even thousands of dollars.

5. Fine Art America

Fine Art America is unique in that it offers physical prints of your images. Customers can choose to place your image on not only prints, but greeting cards, pillows, phone cases, and tote bags, so there are many ways for you to make money on this site. Plus, the company takes care of all the printing services. Payment depends on what you photo is being used for. For example, a large print will bring in more money than a greeting card. Most images sell for at least $50.

6. Photostockplus

Photostockplus offers a generous 85% commission fee – the highest amount for any photo site. You can post any photo you want and set your own prices. However, there are some drawbacks. When users pay via credit card, you must pay the processing fee, which is 3.25% per sale. There is also a $24.95 monthly membership fee to consider. So unless you’re doing well on the site, you may end up losing money instead of making it.

7. Snapwire

Snapwire is a site that allows you to create your own online portfolio and sell images. The only downside is that it is very photographer-based, so you’ll have to spend some time building a stunning portfolio and creating a name for yourself before you can rake in some serious cash. But there are numerous competitions on the site, and if you win, your photos are heavily promoted, so winning one these contests can be very helpful. Your earnings are based on your experience level, so the more experienced you are, the more you’ll earn. Again, the amount you can earn varies widely. You can keep up to 70% of your profits and earn anywhere from $2 to $250.

Whether you enjoy taking photos as a hobby or work as a professional photographer, there are many sites where you can sell your images and make some extra money. It will take time, though. By building a portfolio, researching the type of photos that sell and learning more about your camera’s functions, you’ll improve your skills and increase your profits.
