It doesn’t happen for every state but every year, select states run a tax-free shopping weekend somewhere between late July and early August which is the perfect time to also shop all those back to school sales… tax-free. So if you’re planning to shop for big ticket items during those Back to School sales, mark your calendar for these tax-free shopping days. See if your state is running a tax-free shopping weekend below.

Don't forget the coupons! On top of tax-free shopping, remember to make good use of in-store or online coupons (please check with online retailers to see if they are participating in tax-free shopping toward the end of July and early August) to maximize your back to school buys. Limit: up to $100 on clothing, up to $750 on computers, up to $50 on school supplies, and up to $30 on books
State and normal sales tax rate: 4%

 

Arkansas

When: August 5-6
Limit: up to $100 on clothing and supplies
State and normal sales tax rate: 6.5%

 

Connecticut

When: August 20-26
Limit: up to $100 on clothing and footwear
State and normal sales tax rate: 6.35%

 

Florida

When: August 4-6
Limit: up to $60 on clothing, up to $15 on supplies, and up to $750 on computers
State and normal sales tax rate: 6%

 

Iowa

When: August 4-5
Limit: up to $100 clothing
State and normal sales tax rate:​ 6%

 

Louisiana

When: August 4-5
Limit: up to $2,500 on Tangible Personal Property (TPP) with a 3% tax rate

Maryland

When: August 13-19
Limit: up to $100 on clothing and footwear

Mississippi

When: August 25-27
Limit: up to $100 on clothing, up to $1,500 on computers, and up to $50 on school supplies

Missouri

When: August 4-6
Limit: up to $100 on clothing, up to $1,500 on computers, and up to $50 on supplies
State and normal sales tax rate: 4.225%

 

New Mexico

When: August 4-6
Limit: up to $100 on clothing, up to $1,000 on computers, up to $500 on computer equipment, and up to $30 on supplies

Ohio

Massachusetts is still undecided whether we should have a tax free day in August after several years in a row they did not have one last year. Although they never feel undecided when they want my car tax, sales tax, food tax, real estate tax etc. etc. etc. That is why we have a nick name here- Taxachusetts :--)
