Have you ever misplaced your keys or your cellphone, or completely forgotten about an appointment that you had? Sadly, they say that our memories are the first thing to go as we get older. It’s not really all that surprising, considering our memories are working 24/7. Imagine if you left your car running 24/7. How long do you think it would run before things started to go wrong? When something is used that often, it’s bound to break down eventually, or at least not work as efficiently after some time. But don’t worry - not all hope is lost for our brains just yet! There are certainly some things you can do that can delay that inevitable breakdown… almost like oil changes for the mind! Here are 5 awesome hacks that will help to improve your memory.
- Clear your mind. Whether you’re watching a television show, browsing Facebook on your smartphone, or playing a game on your tablet, our brains take in a good deal of meaningless information. This puts us into a daze of sorts, and when we reach that daze, our minds fall into a state that lacks stimulation. Take a timeout from all of these mindless activities, and life in general, and just clear your head. Lay in bed, take a hot bath, or sit on a quiet park bench. Wherever you are, close your eyes, take a few deep, relaxing breaths in, and then exhale slowly. Don’t think about your bills, work, relationships, or kids for just few moments. Take this time to focus on your breathing. Aside from hitting the refresh button like you want it to do, those deep breaths will bring more oxygen to the brain and increase productivity.

- Complete unfinished tasks. Another way to clear your mind, is to remove any unnecessary stress. An easy way to accomplish this is to finish things you may have started, but have yet to complete. The fact that these things remain unfished stays in the back of our heads and can cause us stress without us even realizing it. If you complete tasks as you start them, or as quickly as possible afterwards, it decreases unnecessary stress on your mind and allows you to concentrate on other things. Think of it as clearing your browser history and freeing up space on your hard drive. So before you take on any new projects, make a list of everything you’ve already started but never got around to finishing. Once all of these things are finished and checked off on your list, only then should you start something new.

- Eat healthy. Your body - brain included - needs proper nutrients to maintain energy and effectiveness. Since your brain consists of about 60% fat and is constantly using calories to feed and maintain it, it is important for you to get the proper amount of healthy fats each day to feed your brain what it needs. - Exercise your mind. When you want something to last a long time, you have to keep it maintained - you have to fine tune it and take care of it properly - and the mind is no exception. If you want your brain to stay sharp, you must keep it active. Don’t be afraid to challenge it. A sharp brain has been proven to retain more information, and thus increase memory efficiency. Brain games and brain teasers, like word searches, crossword puzzles, sudokus, and the like, are great for sharpening your brain. Once you master a task or exercise, up the ante. Increase the difficulty of the challenge and keep pushing yourself to expand upon your own mental capabilities.

- Get adequate sleep. Adequate sleep is is critical in brain function and memory retention, as lack of sleep can destroy any progress attained by the other steps. Think of sleep as a defragment function on your computer. Your body takes this time to process and file your thoughts and memories. Without time to do this, your brain may become overwhelmed with thoughts and information and may not be able to process any of it quickly or accurately. In other words, if you don’t take the time to file things away appropriately, it will be much more difficult for you to find them later on when you need them.
