We’re all well aware of the fact that the various travel websites on the Internet - Priceline, Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, Kayak, and the like - are a huge help when trying to plan a trip and choose the best deal. Unfortunately, though, not everything is what meets the eye with these travel sites. Travel insiders, providers, and employees have quite a few tricks up their sleeves that they don’t want us lazy people to know about. Here are a few travel industry secrets you should keep in mind when booking your next trip!

1. Clearing your cookies may get you a better deal on a flight.

Have you ever been searching the Internet for various flight information and the prices seem to be increasing every time you check back? Well guess what, that’s not your imagination! Some travel websites actually install your computer with a cookie that keeps an eye on and tracks your shopping behavior. Of course, this is done in a completely covert way. The travel sites then hike up the cost of the flight as soon as they know that you’re looking and are interested. In order to prevent this from happening, clear the cookies that are stored on your Internet browser and try again.

Southwest, Delta, and Virgin America are always offering great deals on flights. Be sure to stay on the lookout on DealsPlus!

2. Buying 2 one-way plane tickets may be cheaper than 1 round-trip ticket.

There is no rule saying that your departure and return flights have to be with the same airline. In fact, it may be significantly cheaper to book your flights with different carriers. Try splitting your trip into two one-way flights and searching the different carriers this way. Although it may take a little bit longer to book your trip using this technique, it could be totally worth it in the end.

3. Rates on hotel rooms are actually negotiable.

You may not believe it, but hotel room rates are actually negotiable most times! Many times, the first price you’re given on a hotel room isn’t the final price. In fact, it’s quite a bit like buying a car! If you pretend to walk out after hearing the original quote, you’re probably going to be offered a better one immediately after. Think about it - the hotel doesn’t make any money on an empty room, so it’s much smarter for them to sell a room at a reduced rate than not at all! So the next time you’re in need of a last-minute hotel room, don’t be afraid to try bargaining with the front-desk clerk!

4. It may be smarter to purchase individual plane tickets rather than group tickets.

Although there are plenty of things that are cheaper when purchased in bulk, airplane tickets are not necessarily one of them. There are times in which travel websites offer group tickets at higher rates than individual tickets, so make sure you always search both ways in order get more bang for your buck!

5. Your operating system could have an influence on your search results.

According to research, some travel websites, like Orbitz, actually push higher priced travel options to people with Apple devices, as opposed to people with PCs. This is because Mac users typically spend up to 30% more on travel costs than Windows users do, and are 40% more likely to book 4- and 5-star hotels. Orbitz and other travel sites take advantage of this information and while they can’t actually change the price of the hotel, they can offer the results in whatever order they want. Therefore, they show the more expensive hotel options first for Mac users, knowing that they have a better chance of getting them to bite the bait. In order to avoid falling victim to this trick, always set your search results settings to sort the results by price.

So the next time you’re getting ready to plan a vacation or book a flight, make sure you don’t jump the gun! Take a step back and be sure to take all of these travel website tricks and tips into consideration before pushing that “book” button in order to make sure you’re really getting the best deal out there!
