Starting a new job can be exciting, but you also may have some concerns. How can you make a good impression on your new boss? How can you show your new co-workers that you’re excited about your new position and willing to learn? These are legitimate concerns, since you will be scrutinized in the first few weeks of your new job. Your boss and co-workers will be watching your every move so they can get a feel for your personality and see how you react to certain situations. Get ready to impress in your first week with these nine tips to new job success.

- Introduce yourself. In some jobs, there’s a person – such as an office manager, HR person or someone who’s been at the company a long time – who will introduce new hires to the rest of the team. If this doesn’t happen at your new company and you’re simply directed to your desk, don’t be afraid to take action. Whenever you see someone you haven’t met yet, introduce yourself – “Hi, I’m _____. I just started in the _____department.” Just a simple sentence is all it takes. It’s important to know your fellow co-workers, plus it shows that you’re willing to take initiative and aren’t simply waiting for everyone else to make the first move.
- Warm up to a veteran co-worker. Unless the company is fairly new, every company has an employee who’s been there for longer than a decade. Find out who has longevity in your company and befriend him or her. This person knows the ins and outs of the company and can help you navigate daily life in the workplace. This person can also likely answer any questions you have about the company, employees, and customers.

- Learn more about your boss. You’ll be working with your boss and communicating with him or her on a regular basis, so it helps to know more about their personality and life outside of work. Make small talk. Ask about family and weekend activities. Invite him or her to coffee. Make sure you show a genuine interest in his or her life, though, because you don’t want others to think you’re simply sucking up.

- Say yes to every invitation. During the first few weeks of your new job, your new co-workers will likely want to get to know you. So if they ask you out to lunch, want to take a coffee break with you or invite you to happy hour or other after work event, say yes. Take advantage of these opportunities for others to get to know you. If you decline every invitation, you will come off as cold and unfriendly – not a good way to start a new job.
- Show curiosity. You won’t know everything about your job in the first week, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you’re being trained on a new process, ask for clarification. Ask about your duties and how they align with the duties of other team members. Ask about customers or upcoming projects. Learn as much as you can in the first few weeks. Take notes if you need to. Show others that you’re curious and want to learn more, and you’ll be given more opportunities to prove yourself.
- Put in the extra time and effort. Don’t be keen on punching the time clock right at 5 p.m. Show that you’re committed to your new job and willing to take the extra time to learn and apply your newfound knowledge. Your boss and co-workers will notice if you’re always out the door right when your shift ends. Be sure to put in a little extra time the first few weeks on the job, especially since this is such a critical time for you to prove yourself.

- See where you can make an impact. In the first few weeks of your new job, you may be focused on learning everything you can. You need to go further with this new information and see how you fit into the company. Once you learn more about your role and duties, you can then see where you can make an impact. Do you know an easier way of doing something? Can you help acquire a customer? Can you keep the company under budget? Find out how your skills and experience can help your company succeed. Don’t arrive with a lack of enthusiasm or worse yet, come in with a bad attitude. Nobody wants to work with someone who has a negative attitude. Smile and be upbeat, because if you aren’t interested in your new job, someone else will be.
- Laugh it off. Don’t be afraid to have a sense of humor. Although you need to have some degree of professionalism in the workplace, you still need to let your personality show. After all, work would be quite boring if everyone acted exactly the same and never laughed. So once you’ve gotten to know everyone a little better, crack some jokes and try to have a little fun. Don’t treat your job as a comedy routine, but do try to liven it up once in a while.
