About this Deal

Black Friday 2020 is already underway at popular retailers like Walmart, Kohl's and Wayfair, but one of the best price drops we've seen from early Black Friday 2020 sales has to go to Best Buy for its sale on the cult-favorite Opal ice maker that everyone's been talking about.

That's right—the top-rated GE Profile Opal XPIO13SCSS 2.0 nugget ice maker is on sale now as part of the retailer's second wave of sensational price drops. Originally priced at $599.99, you can get the 4.5-star rated device for $509.99, so you'll save $90.

The Opal 2.0 is an upgrade of the much-loved Opal countertop nugget ice maker ($981.69 at Amazon). We tested the original unit—which was crowdfunded on Indiegogo and raised approximately $2.7 million in a single day—back in 2017 and thought it was the best way to get the kind of semi-soft and chewy nugget ice that Sonic fans can't get enough of.

In his review of the upgraded model, Reviewed Lab Manager Jon Chan said the Opal 2.0 is even better than its celebrated predecessor. Quieter and more intuitive than the original device, the Opal 2.0 offers a more elegant, user-friendly experience—especially where smart functionality is concerned.

Unlike the original, which had its own app, the 2.0 is also compatible with the SmartHQ app, which will sync up with all current-generation GE and Haier appliances (Haier is the parent company of GE). You can use the app to monitor the machine filter, turn the internal light on or off and schedule fresh batches, so if you're having a late-night craving for some nubby-textured ice chunks, this innovative app can help you satisfy that urge.

Additionally, the Opal 2.0 makes mouthwateringly good ice. While Chan noted that chewing on regular cubes frequently can damage teeth over time, nugget ice breaks down as you bite it and becomes something akin to a slushy, which means it's less likely to harm enamel.

With the Opal 2.0, you'll be getting the best on the market: It even features an extra-large side tank with a built-in automatic refill function, wherein excess water can drip back into the unit’s reservoir to be made back into ice, so it's exceedingly convenient and less wasteful as a result.

All in all, the Opal 2.0 is a stellar investment for nugget-ice aficionados. While it has some downsides—namely, it's expensive and the 2.0 only makes ice at a rate of about one pound per hour, which may seem slow to some—this rare discount makes it the perfect time to buy.
