About this Deal
You probably have July 15 circled on your calendar. Here are other child tax credit payment dates to know, along with the payment amounts, eligibility rules and more. We'll explain.
In a little over two weeks, the child tax credit payments begin. To help you get ready, the IRS has opened three online tools so you can check your eligibility, register for the tax credit and unenroll from the monthly payments, which by default will go out each month this year to qualifying families. And if you know how much you'll get now, you can start planning how you'll use your money.
If you're not required to file a tax return because your income is too low, or you don't meet minimum tax-filing requirements, you'll have to move quickly on using the new IRS nonfiler tool or preparing a tax return. Overpayment for the child tax credit is something else you'll need to keep an eye on -- a real but hopefully uncommon situation that could have you owing the IRS money next tax season.
