McDonald's is turning up the heat on its popular Chicken McNuggets.
On Tuesday, the fast-food giant announced it will roll out Spicy Chicken McNuggets for the first time ever in the U.. The menu item will be available nationwide for a limited time starting September 16.
McDonald's said the McNuggets will be breaded with a tempura coating made of both cayenne and chili peppers.
It's the first flavor McDonald's has introduced to the McNugget since they first launched in 1983.
"As our customers have been asking for Spicy McNuggets for some time now, we couldn’t think of a better time to bring them to our menus," Linda VanGosen, vice president of menu innovation at McDonald's, said in a statement.

To pair with the new McNuggets, McDonald's is also introducing a Mighty Hot Sauce combining crushed red pepper and spicy chilis and savory garlic.
The new McNuggets will already have plenty of competition in the spicy nugget space, as both rival chains Wendy's and Burger King offer their own spins on the menu item.
Along with the McNuggets, McDonald's is also adding a Chips Ahoy! McFlurry, which features vanilla soft-serve ice cream, caramel topping and Chips Ahoy! cookie pieces.
