10 Tips For Winning The Lottery

3 0
I very occasionally buy a lottery ticket for the big weekly prize though I more often buy scratch-off tickets. I decided to do some online research to see if there
really were any strategies to improve a chance of winning and I found that the
rather prestigious magazine, American Scientific, seems to think so. I checked
further for more tips and I want to share what were salient across all of the
resources I used. So, here we go!

1. Buy tickets for small, state lotteries that haven't had a lot of press.

2. Look for a jackpot that's rolled over at least five times and that remains below $40 million.

3. Don't pick the number one.

4. Avoid "lucky" numbers 7, 13, 23, 32, 42, and 48.

5. Select 26, 34, 44, 45, and especially the overlooked number 46.

6. Avoid any recognizable pattern.

7. Give slight preference to numbers at the edge of the ticket, which are underused.

8. Don't pick a series of numbers such as 1,2,3,4,5,6.

9. Join a lottery group or form one. You get more chances that way.

10. Play only when the jackpot is incredibly high (at odds with #2, above).

These bits of advice seemed to be about the same throughout the sources I read.
I'm going to try to form a lottery club of 10 people that will last for 10
weeks and cost each person 10 dollars. We will play ten one dollar tickets
each week for ten weeks and see how we do.

Good luck!!

I don't play often but when I do I let the computer pick my numbers. But, some of the suggestions are still very helpful. Nice article!

I like the idea of the lottery group!!

You might want to try the same simple group I am forming to sort of get your feet wet. If I had enough interest I'd form a group here using PayPal but I think it would be to complicated with people so far about and it might be hard to trust someone that you've never met. Still, it's an idea.

i like the scarcth offs- i have a better chance at winning ;)

I ask for whatever scratch off was just put in the case and has not been sold yet. The new packs seem to be heavy on winners in the first few cards. That would get people excited about buying more. If they do have a scratch-off for which they just put in a new pack I always buy four since most scratches off have a slightly better than 1 in 4 chance of winning. By buying four I am pretty certain of having one winner. I did this recently when I bought the first four $5 cards in a pack and won $300.

I have bought a lottery ticket may be once so far! I always think the odds of winning are way too low to even try. This tempts me to try one more time! Thanks :)

@erick99 - thanks for the suggestion on scratch-offs...I am going to give it one try!

The notion of preferring or avoiding certain numbers to increase your chance of winning is just plain silly, assuming that the game isn't rigged. You could increase your odds of being a SOLE winner by using numbers that aren't used in dates, since so many people choose birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Avoid sequences and patterns? Tell that to the last two Powerball jackpot winners. The most recent had the sequence 45-46-47 and the one just before that 29-30 and 45-47-49.

I agree Fluffy. I have enough statistics (undergrad & grad) to know better. I am just reporting what I read from the sources I used. Any given number has an equal chance of winning.

I think the best way is to be consistent and buy with a group of co-workers. I have read a lot of articles about groups winning the lottery a lot of times.
