Mother's Day or Any Day...Great Gift Ideas for Gals

3 0
I told my husband all I want for Mother's Day is one weekend day each month for me to just go do something alone or with friends for the day. We don't have a lot of disposable money so I'd probably just hand out at the gym or go on a full-day hike w/ friends. I told him I don't even want to see him or the kids that day. *Sigh* Like that will ever happen but the thought of it is pretty relaxing though :) Moms er done. are pretty tired. Whether they have little babies at home, teens driving them nuts, or college students filling them with worry, a mother's work is never done. I wanted to make a list of a few thoughtful and relaxing gifts for Mom this Mother's Day or really any day of the year. (Little hint: doing something nice for your mom or wife for absolutely no reason is the most AWESOME thing ever...although she may be suspicious and hire someone to follow you;))

Make a Custom Gift Basket: Instead of buying an expensive pre-made basket this year, make a custom one! There are always pointless items we never use in those pre-made baskets. Choose her favorite chocolate, face wash, gift card, etc. Get a basket from any department store or go to Michals and use your 40% coupon to buy one. While you are there, get some shredded paper filler or just use the leftovers from Easter baskets. Buy or find a nice bow and a large plastic bag or plastic wrapping paper (you can find this at most department or craft stores). Women can always tell when you took time on a gift!

Skip the Coupons, Just Do the Chores/Favors: Coupon Books, coupon books, coupon books.....They are either never redeemed or the gifter is no longer in the mood to do all those nice things. Instead of making a coupon book with promises to clean the house, bake a meal, give hugs, rub feet, do dishes, etc...just do ALL of those things in ONE day. You can even make her a schedule for the day (kind of like they do in the spas. Give her time to watch a movie while you bring the kids to the park or send them outside while you clean the house. Promise her a day of no stress and make sure you include a gourmet meal. Give her a bell so you can be all her call at all hours and DO NOT complain. It's only 24 hours but she will be grateful for much longer!!

What Does She Love?: I LOVE elephants. My husband once brought me on a surprise road trip to ride an elephant and one of the only zoos left that still allow it. He wouldn't tell me where we were going but I was in tears when we arrived. Riding an elephant was cool but the fact that he did all that research and planning was just the best thing ever!!!

Listen to Her: If your wife or Mom had been saying she is due for a haircut or nail appointment then make an appointment with her favorite stylist for a cut AND style so she won't have to try to fit in the appointment on her own. Throw in a facial for bonus points :)

Let Her Take a Vacation: Contact some of her friends or relatives and try to set up a week or weekend of fun for her.Take off work and watch the kids. It may not be a family vacation and you may not be able to regularly do this but, even if it is just a one-time thing, she will be relaxed and will probably even miss you and the kids!

Frame the Kids Artwork: Although we do get an overload of artwork, there are always a few items that we really really cherish.  If you are doing this for your mom, look through her scrapbooks and find some of your old kindergarten paintings. Put them in a nice frame that matches the home decor.

If You are Handy...: Make mom or the wife a shelf, table, or some item she might need. If you aren't too talented in that area, stick with something small. She'll still appreciate it...even if it ends up in the hallway closet ;)

Spend Time with Her: Alright, so you HATE antiquing. Suck it up for the day. Loathe shopping? Deal with it. Think couples massages are dumb? Don't tell your pals about it and just enjoy it. Think Gardening stinks? Get your truck over to Lowes and "help" her pick out and plant some flowers. This is a tricky one because it can all be for nothing if she hears you mutter even one complaint. Just have fun and spend time doing something she loves with her. Who knows? It might be more fun than you thought :)

Back her Up: Well, do this anyhow, especially with the kids. I know there are a few people who actually enjoy a little banter but if she wants the kids to say "yes ma'am/sir", enforce it w/ the kids. If she wants the mailman to stop putting packages in the puddle on the front porch, have a talk with the mailman. If she has talked about having friends over for a cookout, personally call and invite them and go buy food.

Any more? Whether you are a husband, son, daughter, mom, family pet ;) etc.... leave your ideas and share your awesome Mother's Day (or Father's Day, Birthday, Anniversary, etc) stories. I'm a sucker for a good story and I'm gonna keep this post open and refreshed so my hubby can grab some ideas ;)

This year, I sent my mom one of those free personalized cards from that promotion Cardstore was having. I put a lot of time in the wording and pictures (Somehow i ended up spending over an hour fining the perfect card and pictures)and, even though my mom knew it was free, she really appreciated it. I'm making a basket for my mother-in-law this year because she will be visiting. I wish I had done more when I was a kid/teenager for my mom on Mother's Day, but it wasn't until I had kids of my own that I truly appreciated all she does and did for me. Moms are awesome! (and, hey, so are Dads!)

^I don't know if it beats all, but I'll take a sincere homemade card over most things any day! I mean, it's my money too so I'd prefer my husband save our money and put time and thought into the gift :-)
