The description at tigerdirect has been corrected. This item runs Android 1.5, not 2.1.

It does say Operating System: Andriod 2.1

But what I believe it is going to be shipped with Android 1.5 and you need to update the ROM. (Which can be really a concern if you aren't much familiar with the process.)

I have ordered one, because I know how to update it till Froyo(2.2) but I would say this product is in its last days of life cycle. You can't use most of the popular android apps in this one, because of lack of powerful processor, G-sensor ,capacitive touch screen(means no multi-touch gestures) and build in camera.

I am a developer so for me it works just great, but if you are an end user please beware because the experience of this device may not be upto your expectation.

There is conflicting information on the internet as to whether this 501521 version is upgradeable to Android 2.1 or not. It comes with TigerDirect's "30 DAY IRON CLAD GUARANTEE" which is "backed by our promise that you'll be satisfied with the product or we'll take it back within 30 days"

I purchase refurb units all the time, and I have had very good luck with them. I know a bunch of people that do refurb units too, and we all swear by them. Every once in a great while, I get a lemon, but it always gets replaced for free. I've really only had 1 bad experience with a refurb unit, and it was a Samsung BluRay player that had to be replaced twice and the third one died.... other than that, I've probably purchased about 20 major items that have been refurbished and they have all been good.

Operating system is android 2.1
That's the killer. I don't think it can be upgraded
To 2.3 or later

Price is decent though

From a search of the model version 501521, it looks like this unit is running Android 1.5 (Cupcake), which can be upgraded to 2.1 (Eclair), but no higher. At the time of Archos' most recent firmware release for Cupcake - September 2010 - Eclair was the newest firmware. It has been succeeded by Froyo (2.2) and Honeycomb (3.0).
